Redefining Success
This blog is based on one of the biggest shifts in my journey: the realization that I can have both success and be true to myself - Elise Vroonland, co-founder OneMillionWomen
In a world that celebrates constant juggling and hard work, many of us feel caught between two opposing paths: striving for success or staying true to who we are.
For a long time, I felt the same way.
It’s as though we’re being told that to “make it,” we must compromise our authenticity, silence our intuition, or push beyond our natural limits. But what does it even mean to “make it”? Is there ever a moment when you’ve truly “made it”? And then what, do you stop?
So what if the choice isn’t either/or? What if we could let go of the societal pressure, the idea that success is defined by external standards, and give space to the idea that you can have both: a fulfilling, successful life and stay deeply connected to yourself?
Redefining Success
Success is often measured by external markers, right? Things like revenue, recognition, and the size of your network. While these achievements can be meaningful in a way, they’re only part of the picture.
For me, true success is holistic.
It’s about building something that feels aligned with my values (freedom, connection, honesty, impact and adventure), allows me to live my truth, and uplifts others along the way.
When I lead from my heart and am authentic, my version of success doesn’t just impact my bottom line; it provides for my family, it inspires the people around me and I contribute to change for the better. To me, success is about creating a life that’s rich in meaning, connection, and fulfillment, material gain happens as a result.
The Myth of Compromise
For many women founders and leaders, the narrative of compromise runs deep:
"If I slow down, I’ll fall behind."
"If I set boundaries, I’ll seem difficult."
"If I ask for help, they’ll think I can’t handle it."
"If I focus on my dreams, I’ll let my family down."
"If I show emotion, I’ll look weak."
"If I prioritize myself, I’ll seem selfish."
"If I say no, I’ll miss out on opportunities."
"If I rest, people will think I’m lazy."
"If I share my struggles, they’ll think I’m failing."
Maybe now, as you are reading this, you feel your body responding. A contraction, or your heart that speaks. This is how you know your narrative of compromise, or maybe several even.
These are stories we’ve inherited or created, it is not your truth. The reality is that being authentic isn’t a weakness; it’s actually a strength.
When you show up as your whole self, flaws, feelings, and all, you create space for others to do the same. Whether it’s with your team, your investors, or your clients, authenticity builds trust. It’s the foundation for strong relationships and sustainable growth together.
And I know that fully showing up as yourself takes power and perseverance. Not everybody will like it, and that’s okay.
Embodiment: The Bridge Between You and Success
At the core of staying true to myself is embodiment. Embodiment isn’t just about knowing my values; it’s about living them through my actions, words, and presence. It’s the practice of connecting with my body and intuition so deeply that how I behave, the words I say, and the decisions I make all come from a place of deep alignment, rather than fear, doubt, or external pressure.
And when something isn’t aligned, my body speaks to me. I feel it in my throat, my belly contracts, my heart closes, or anxiety runs through me.
You Deserve Both
What I learned along the way is this: I don’t have to choose between being a high achiever and being true to myself. In fact, my authenticity is my superpower. It’s what makes me and my leadership unique and my business compelling.
Back to you.
Imagine waking up to a life where you fully own your superpowers. A life that feels abundant in the widest sense of the word, joyful and aligned. A life where you lead with clarity, connect deeply with yourself and those around you and make a lasting impact. Not by following someone else’s blueprint but by embracing your own truth and your own blueprint.
It’s possible.
It starts with letting go of the idea that success and authenticity are at odds. The moment you truly decide to lead from your inner wisdom, with every bone in your body, you’re already on the path to having both.
Your Next Step
If you’re ready to step into this possibility, let’s start small.
Take a moment today to connect with your body: breathe deeply, move your body mindfully, your shoulders, your chest, your hips, and notice what feels true for you right now. At this very moment.
Then ask yourself: What would success look like if it were fully aligned with who I am? What would success look like if I fully owned my superpowers?
When you lead with this question, you’ll discover that success isn’t something you have to chase, it’s something you create by being unapologetically yourself.
With love, Elise
